ProMusica Minnesota will open their tenth anniversary season with Horn & Heart on Sunday, October 11 at 3pm in Chapel of the Christ on the campus of Martin Luther College. Throughout the past decade, ProMusica has produced over fifty chamber music concerts, bringing renowned artists and the utmost artistic excellence to Southern Minnesota and beyond. “Chamber music is best made with friends, performed for friends” is an oft revisited mantra of founder Bethel Balge, and the warm camaraderie with expert collaboration can be felt throughout ProMusica’s offerings.

The concert features an outstanding roster of performers: Bethel Balge, piano; Susie Park, violin; and Patrick Pridemore, French horn. Bethel is the founding Artistic Director of ProMusica as well as the organization’s predecessor, Summit Avenue Music Series. In addition to her artistic leadership, she is an accomplished pianist, and her dynamic performances can be enjoyed at most ProMusica concerts. Violinist Susie Park is one of ProMusica’s most frequent collaborators. As First Associate Concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra, Susie is in demand as a soloist and chamber music collaborator locally and around the world. New to ProMusica Minnesota is hornist Patrick Pridemore. Patrick has enjoyed a prolific career with chamber music ensembles, opera, Hollywood, and Broadway.

Featured works of Horn & Heart include:

  • Sonata for Piano & Horn, Op. 17, by Ludwig van Beethoven
  • Violin Sonata in A Major, by Cesar Franck
  • Trio for Violin, Horn, and Piano in E-flat major. Op. 40, by Johannes Brahms

Horn & Heart combines some of the most recognizable repertoire for horn alongside the dazzling and richly harmonic Violin Sonata of Cesar Franck. The French horn is a scarce addition to a ProMusica concert. “A group of horns could make orchestral textures mellow or majestic or heroic. Solo horns could be slow and somber, or they could evoke vigorous hunting scenes and the open-air beauty of nature,” describes Joel Fredrich of Martin Luther College, who provides the historical context for each piece. The combination of piano, violin, and horn can conjure a unique blend of musical colors, ranging from warm, to pensive, to invigorating, to emotionally inspiring.
