Any parent who has ever lost a child can tell you that you never get over it. Nothing takes away the pain. Founded in 1998 by four mothers who understand the grief first-hand, One Bright Star, attempts to come alongside those who have suffered such a loss.
Event Purpose
In that spirit, One Bright Star is hosting their annual Mothers of Angels Painting Event on Saturday, May 5th, 2018 at the Lake Crystal Area Recreation Center from 1-4 pm. The event is open to mothers who have lost a child, those who love them, and anyone in the community who wants to support them.
“It’s a social gathering… so people don’t feel as alone and can meet other people who are going through the same thing they are.”
“We’ll have appetizers, pop, and water,” said Amber Bannerman, One Bright Star’s Executive Director. “I’ll talk briefly then we’ll get started with the painting. It’s a social gathering for parents who’ve lost a child as a means of support so people don’t feel as alone and can meet other people who are going through the same thing they are.”
The Painting
About the painting, Bannerman explained, “We have Carolina Koopmans of Unwine Creations leading the painting part of the event. She supplies all of the materials. She’ll bring the canvases, paint, and the paintbrushes so people don’t need to bring anything, they just come as they are.”
This year’s participants will be able to choose from two butterfly designs.
Other Events
The organization hosts a variety of events through the year. “Our Children’s Memorial Service is on September 30th this year,” Bannerman said. “Our biggest fundraising event is our Celebration of Life Gala in February. We also host our Children’s Mini Camp in June which is free for all children who register. We do Comfort Coffee twice a month, a place for anyone who has lost a child to come for coffee and conversation and share about their grief journey. We just started doing trivia nights which we’re planning on making a biannual event.”
In 2003 the organization was the driving force behind The Children’s Memorial, a 30 foot fountain and reflection pool in Erlandson Park. The park is located on Victory and Main in Mankato.
