Saint Peter – Folk art and illustration reflecting the experience of putting down roots in rural Kasota comprise On Common Ground: New work by Ashley Siehler, a solo exhibition on display October 2 – November 28 at the Arts Center of Saint Peter.
Siehler, a folk artist and illustrator whose family moved frequently throughout her childhood, made Minnesota her home in 2019. “The prospect of living in one place for the rest of my life was daunting,” says Siehler in her artist’s statement. “As time goes on, I’ve grown more comfortable with putting down deep roots and getting to know an area intimately.”
Siehler’s folk art focuses on animal species native to Minnesota, “glorifying them with vivid colors and floral flourishes” in watercolor, ink, alcohol marker, and gouache. Her illustrations merge everyday objects and situations with a sense of fantasy, representing a desire for everyday life to be full of possibilities.
The public is welcome at the opening reception for the exhibition on Sunday, October 4, from 3:00-5:00 p.m., featuring light refreshments and brief remarks by the artist.
The Arts Center’s galleries are free, wheelchair-accessible, and open to the public five days per week: Wednesdays-Fridays 1:00-5:00 p.m., Saturdays 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Sundays 1:00-5:00 p.m.
