Saint Peter – Ghost Stories With The Cutie Bears, a new body of work by North Mankato-based artist and arts administrator Dana Sikkila, will be on display in the main gallery while Uprooted, photography by Minneapolis photo and video artist Kristine Heykants, will be exhibited in the window gallery from January 31-March 29 at the Arts Center of Saint Peter.
Sikkila’s paintings, prints, and sculptures explore the artist’s personal history and the experience of constantly being asked what’s next. “My work is meant to overtake the vertical walls, turning my atypical tendencies into a humorous, almost adorable mental mess,” Sikkila says.
Heykants’ Uprooted is a documentary project about the rural farming community of Belmond, Iowa (population 2300). “I aim to create insight around our mutual interconnection at a pivotal time when the perspective of city dwellers is at odds with those living in the country; while shedding light on the paradoxes, complexities and social realities of rural Midwestern life,” Heykants says.
A reception for both exhibitions will take place on Saturday, February 1, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. The artists will deliver brief remarks at approximately 3:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public, and the galleries are wheelchair accessible.
