Located just 3 miles outside of Mankato, Minneopa State Park is home to Southern Minnesota’s largest waterfall and much more.
Established in 1905, Minneopa State Park is Minnesota’s third oldest state park. The name Minneopa means “water falling twice” in the Dakota language. Seppman Mill built in 1862 is on the National Register of Historic Places. The view from the mill is stunning as it looks out over the river valley. Also on the National Register of Historic Places are the seven structures in the park that were built in the 1930’s by the Work’s Progress Administration. The state park makes a great day destination or stay overnight in the campground. The waterfalls have long been the main attraction in addition to the beautiful hiking trails. The stairway leading to the lower Minneopa Creek is carved from limestone.
Visitors can observe the herd of American bison that roam in the natural prairie setting. The road winding through the bison range allows visitors to view the herd from their vehicles. Bison viewing hours change with the season and the drive is closed on Wednesdays.
